Baby Acne

Does Your Baby Have Acne? How To Recognize Newborn Baby Acne, Symptoms And Treatment.

New parents are often concerned when their baby is ill or even just fussy. If your baby has a rash you may wonder if it's a sign of something more serious. A common condition known as neonatal, or baby acne, causes small rash-like pimples and is most often present on the face. Baby acne usually occurs in newborn infants, after a few weeks, and is most likely caused by the mother's hormonal changes during pregnancy. The condition is more common in boys than in girls and appears on the face as small red bumps. Whiteheads may also be present. Baby acne looks worse when a baby cries because of the general redness crying produces.

Since your newborn is regularly seen by your pediatrician during those first important months you can discuss your baby's acne during a well-check visit. No specific tests are needed as the physician can easily diagnose baby acne by simply looking at the rash. Once baby acne is confirmed you can discuss treatments and ask about possible diet or other restrictions. Most of the time, baby acne clears up on its own and in several weeks. Usually, no medical treatment will be prescribed. But if the rash persists for months or longer it may be necessary to treat the condition medically and your pediatrician will prescribe a topical treatment in the form of a medicated cream.

Being proactive in how you care for your baby's acne can help to ease your mind. Using a soft wash cloth, gently clean your baby's face with a very mild soap and be sure not to rub or scrub as this will cause the acne to become irritated. Pat your baby's face with a soft towel. Do not use over-the-counter acne medications and avoid oils on the facial area. Although baby acne can sometimes look uncomfortable, it probably bothers you more than it bothers your baby. Before long, you should notice the acne subsiding and fading.
